A flat and rectangle piece of upcycled wood that depicts a rounded Puerto Rican flag symbol with a tribal sun icon above the word "WEPA". This piece has been wood burned (pyrography) with a border that surrounds the perimeter of the piece. This is a rugged piece so the dimensions are intentionally distorted in order to replicate the nature of the iconography and cultural heritage of the Taino people. The flag is colored in metallic acrylic paint so depending on the viewing angle, one can see the colors shimmering. The piece has been coated with a glossy clear coat for protection.
In the Puerto Rican dialect, "WEPA" is a versatile slang interjection that apparently originates as an imitation of the English Woo-hoo!. The term rose to prominence in Puerto Rico thanks to the 1974 song “El Jogorio (Wepa Wepa Wepa)” by Alfonso Velez.
The dimensions of the piece are:
- 7 and a half inches tall
- 4 and a half inches wide
- an eighth of an inch deep
- The piece already has hanging hardware attached
